TRIMETAZIDINE

VETAZIDINE

Each film-coated tablet contains: Trimetazidine Hydrochloride BP 20mg

Pharmacological Classification

Anti-Anginal

Mechanism of Action:

Trimetazidine is a cellular acting anti-ischaemic agent. It has 3 main properties by which it acts as a cytoprotective agent. It inhibits the anaerobic glycolysis and fatty acid metabolism, thus allowing only aerobic glycolysis. This action helps to restore the energy balance in the cell. It inhibits acidosis and free radical accumulation in the cell. All these actions help the cell to restore the normal ionic and metabolic balance.

Pharmacokinetics:

Following oral administration blood levels reach a peak in 2-3 hours and then decrease gradually with a terminal half - life of about 6 hours. The bioavailability of orally administered trimetazidine is approximately 90 %. Food intake does not modify absorption. The major route of elimination is urinary, with about 60% of the administered dose being eliminated in the unchanged form. The rest is metabolized. Little is known of the properties of the metabolites, which are however only present in weak concentrations. Plasma Protein Binding: Approximately 16 % is bound to plasma proteins, chiefly albumin.

Indications:

Vetazidine is indicated in the treatment of:·          Ischaemic heart disease (angina pectoris, sequelae of infarction)
